Looking back at the last couple of years and the trends in technology, one thing becomes clear: voice search is not some passing fancy. The advent of tools like Alexa and the Amazon Echo for home use allows people to search for what they need without being near a phone, laptop, or desktop. At the moment it is the older generations, predictably enough, that are resistant to the tech, while younger people are considerably more likely to purchase and use it. It seems highly likely, though, that a couple of decades down the line more homes will be wired for sound, with these sorts of devices ever ready to answer any query that comes to mind. Optimization has always been about figuring out what people are searching for and then configuring a website so that it will rank highly based on that criteria. Keywords have long been relevant, as is the creation and implementation of high-value content that will make sites attractive to Google bots and those of other search engines. With voice search, though, people are trying to find things using different terminology. Their questions have a much more conversational feel to them; they’re not the disjointed phrases you might traditionally type into a search engine.
There’s no reason that your site shouldn’t rank just because people are using voice search, but you need to realize that a whole new realm of queries might be opening up, with long-tail keywords to match. There are still optimization tools that you can use to figure out the language people will be using. You just have to discount queries that you know aren’t going to work with desktop searches because people aren’t going to be asking them.
As this technology is all very new, and the market so far for voice searching is relatively limited, there’s no need to think that your SEO campaign is going to be turned upside down by this trend in a week, or a month. But it’s coming, and it’s better to get out ahead of it than to suddenly wake up in ten years and see that your entire website will need to be rebuilt because the language people use to try and find your products is entirely different. Consider this a wakeup call. Voice search is going to become much more commonplace sooner rather than later, and that could mean wholesale changes for SEO.
