SEO specialists have a long history of looking at Google trends and conducting experiments to see if what they’re observing can gain them shortcuts to help them rank. Such is the case with putting business phone numbers in their title tags, for instance. The phrase “near me” is one on which Google places a lot of emphasis if we’re talking about SEO. It makes sense, because people use phrases like “best Indian restaurants near me” or “best reviewed dry cleaner near me” all the time. Recently, Google caused a stir because they claimed that in the latest iteration of the algorithm, they would not be rewarding use of the term “near me” anymore. They want people to avoid using it because of possible confusion between documents that have the term “near me” in them and those who are looking to find something in their immediate vicinity.

 

The thing is, though, if someone is looking nearby for the service that you provide, then you’re still likely to rank highly, despite this assertion by the search engine giant to the contrary. It could be that this new policy just hasn’t gone into effect yet, or it could be that this is still going to be a way to generate some cheap site traffic going forward. The upshot seems to be that for now, at least, it makes sense to continue using the term “near me” within your website. That way, you’re not only going to attract customers based on the merits of your products, but also through the use of it as a keyword. It may seem a little unscrupulous, but it’s still entirely a white hat tactic. Until Google truly takes steps to amend this gap, why not take advantage of it?
